Life Events

Record birthdays, birthplaces, and dates passed for yourself and your Lovd Ones.

Why Life Events?

Life events turn names on a card into people with stories. Birthdays show up on your calendar and timeline. Birthplaces pin people to the map. Dates passed let you mark and honour those you've lost. Every field is optional — add what you know, leave what you don't.

Birthday

Birthdays can be set for yourself and for any Lovd One you've created.

Setting your own birthday

  1. Go to Account Settings → Profile
  2. Open the Birthday field
  3. Pick a date and save

Setting a Lovd One's birthday

You can set it either when creating the Lovd One, or later from their card:

  1. Open the People page
  2. Find the Lovd One and open their card
  3. Use the inline birthday picker, or open their profile to edit

Where birthdays appear

Calendar

Birthdays appear as tiles on the day they fall each year.

Timeline

Each person gets a point on the timeline at their date of birth.

Person cards

Cards show the formatted birthday with a cake icon.

Profile view

The full profile modal displays the birthday alongside other details.

Birthplace

Birthplace works like a geocoded label — you search for a place, and we save both the name and its coordinates so the person can appear on the map.

Setting your own birthplace

  1. Go to Account Settings → Profile
  2. Start typing a place name in the Birthplace field
  3. Select a result from the dropdown and save

You'll also be prompted for your birthplace during onboarding.

Setting a Lovd One's birthplace

Open the Lovd One's edit form, type into the Birthplace field, and pick a result.

Where birthplaces appear

Birthplaces show up on the map view, giving you a pin for each person you know the origin of. This makes it easy to see where your family and loved ones come from at a glance.

Map pins are rolling out. Birthplace data is already being captured; map pins and related views are being added now. Anything you record today will start appearing automatically.

Date Passed Away

For Lovd Ones who've passed away, you can record the date. This is only available on Lovd Ones — we don't collect it for live accounts.

Setting a date

  1. Open the Lovd One's card on the People page
  2. Edit their profile
  3. Fill in the Date passed field and save

Visual changes

Once both a birthday and a date passed are set, lovd treats the Lovd One as a remembered person:

  • Their card shows a lifespan like 1945 – 2023, with a floral icon in place of the cake.
  • On the timeline, their icon becomes the florist variant.
  • Repeating birthday tiles on the calendar stop after the date passed, so you're not reminded to celebrate forever.
Set both birthday and date passed. The lifespan badge and florist icon need both dates. If you only have a date passed, we recommend adding an approximate birthday so the Lovd One is properly honoured across the app.

Editing or removing a date

The same flow — open their profile and clear the field, or pick a new date. The visuals update immediately everywhere the Lovd One appears.

Privacy & Visibility {#privacy-visibility}

  • Your own birthday and birthplace are visible only to people you share a collection with. Outside of that, they're hidden.
  • Lovd One life events follow the same rules as the Lovd One itself: their owner always sees them, and anyone sharing a collection the Lovd One is tagged in can see their info.
  • Profile details of a Lovd One — including the full profile view with birthday and birthplace — are only editable by the owner who created them.
  • You can change your own Allow Tagging setting under Privacy Settings; that controls whether others can tag you in photos, which affects whether your Lovd One-adjacent details ever surface.

Tips & FAQ

Approximate dates are fine. Don't have the exact birthday of a great-grandparent? Use 1st January of the year you know — it's enough for the calendar and timeline to place them correctly.
Honouring a memory. Adding a date passed doesn't hide the Lovd One. They stay taggable in photos; the change is visual, so you know at a glance that this person is being remembered, not celebrated.

Can I set my own date passed?

No — that field only exists on Lovd Ones. If someone you love had an account and then passed, a trusted family member can convert the memory by creating a Lovd One and tagging the same photos.

Do birthdays generate reminders or emails?

Not today. Birthdays currently surface visually in the calendar, timeline, and on person cards — no notifications are sent.

Can I see a map of everyone's birthplaces?

Yes, on the collection map view, and it's rolling out to the Lovd Ones map more broadly. If you don't see pins yet, make sure people you're curious about have birthplaces recorded.
