Life Events

Record birthdays, birthplaces, and dates passed for yourself and your Lovd Ones.

Why Life Events?

Life events turn names on a card into people with stories. Birthdays appear on your calendar and timeline. Birthplaces save a place and its coordinates. Dates passed let you mark and honour those you've lost. Every field is optional, so add what you know and leave the rest.

Birthday

You can set a birthday for yourself and for any Lovd One.

Your own birthday

Go to Account Settings → Profile (/account/profile), open the Birthday field, pick a date, and save.

A Lovd One's birthday

Set it when you create the Lovd One, or later: open the People page, open their card, and use the inline birthday picker or edit their profile.

Where birthdays appear

Calendar

A grouped tile on the day each year — stacked avatars when multiple people share a birthday.

Timeline

A point at the date of birth.

Person cards & profile

The formatted birthday with a cake icon, plus the full profile view.

Birthplace

A birthplace is a geocoded label: you search for a place, and we save both the name and its coordinates. You're also prompted for your birthplace during onboarding.

Your own birthplace

Go to Account Settings → Profile (/account/profile), start typing in the Birthplace field, pick a result from the dropdown, and save.

A Lovd One's birthplace

Open the Lovd One's edit form, type into the Birthplace field, and pick a result.

We're capturing birthplaces now; the map view is coming. Coordinates you record today are stored and will appear once the birthplace map ships, with nothing to re-enter later.

Date Passed Away

For Lovd Ones who've passed away, you can record the date. This field exists only on Lovd Ones, not on live accounts.

Setting a date

Open the Lovd One's card on the People page, edit their profile, fill in the Date passed field, and save.

Editing or removing

Open their profile again, then clear the field or pick a new date. Visuals update immediately everywhere the Lovd One appears.

What changes when a date passed is set

When both a birthday and a date passed are present, lovd treats the Lovd One as a remembered person:

The card shows a lifespan like 1945 – 2023 with a floral icon in place of the cake.
On the timeline, their icon becomes the floral variant.
Repeating birthday tiles on the calendar stop at the year they passed.

The lifespan badge needs both dates. With only a date passed, add an approximate birthday so the lifespan and floral icon appear and the Lovd One is properly honoured.

Privacy & Visibility

Your own birthday and birthplace are visible only to people you share a collection with.
A Lovd One's life events follow the same rules as the Lovd One: the owner always sees them, as does anyone sharing a collection the Lovd One is tagged in.
A Lovd One's profile details, including birthday and birthplace, are editable only by the owner who created them.
Your Allow Tagging setting under Privacy Settings controls whether others can tag you in photos.

Tips & FAQ

Approximate dates are fine. Don't know a great-grandparent's exact birthday? Use 1 January of the year you know, which is enough for the calendar and timeline to place them.

Honouring a memory. A date passed doesn't hide the Lovd One; they stay taggable in photos. The change is purely visual, so you can tell at a glance that this person is being remembered, not celebrated.

Can I set my own date passed?

No, it exists only on Lovd Ones. If someone you love had an account and then passed, a trusted family member can create a Lovd One and tag the same photos.

Do birthdays send reminders or emails?

Not today. Birthdays surface visually in the calendar, timeline, and on person cards, but no notifications are sent.

Can I see a map of everyone's birthplaces?

Not yet. Birthplaces are being captured now, and the birthplace map is on the way. Record birthplaces today and they'll appear when it ships.
